Failed asylum seekers, who are at the end of their appeal process to obtain permission to stay in the UK, are denied free access to secondary Health Care.
We are talking about people who are not supported by the State anymore (unless under Section 4 with provision of vouchers only - this is anyway the case for a small amount of people) and who are living on the streets or with family or friends. Some of them cannot go even be deported back to their countries because of the political / military situation there. Whenever they use hospital services (unless it is an emergency) they are billed thousands of pounds although they are homeless and have no permission to work.
As a consequence:
- people are refused basic health care if failed asylum seekers; a mother to be would be able to deliver at the hospital but ante-natal care and care after the delivery would be charged!
- people are scared to go to the hospital for the fear of being billed (and not being able to pay) and of being referred to the Home Office and deported.
We believe failed asylum seekers have a basic human right to free secondary health care until they are in this country.
