On the 4th September Croydon Older People's Network (OPeN) went to town with a Government representative at Central Hall Westminster. Bernard Rickman and Kail Gunaratnam spoke about their expereinces of discrimination and delivered OPeN findings on discrimination where over 90% of older people in Croydon said they were affected by age discrimination.
OPeN joins with Help the Aged in calling for a ban on age discrimination. The Charity's Just Equal Treatment campaign aims to put ageism on an equal footing with racism and sexism. Nearly two thirds of older people feel the Government is not doing enough to combat age discrimination, according to new research by Help the Aged.
Kail Gunaratnam, a member of OPeN's planning group at Croydon Voluntary Action, says: 'It's high time the Government stopped dragging its heels and took an active role in fighting age discrimination. 'Ageist attitudes and practices are a daily blight on older people's lives, affecting the type of care they receive, the insurance options available to them and even the way they are spoken to'.
'I would also like the Government to think about people facing multiple discrimination we have stop society thinking racism and sexism and prjudice against older and disabled people is OK or just one of those things.
'The Government must take responsibility for protecting older people, but they must make the anti discrimination work' -Age discrimination must be made illegal immediately.'
