Young role models - where are they?

There are many young people who are "doing their bit" for the community - I am aware of a significant number of secondary-school-age girls who are working with primary-school-age girls through GirlGuiding; these are Guides who help every week with Brownies, sometimes as part of their Duke of Edinburgh scheme efforts. These girls need to be recognised at a wider level than just the Brownie Pack thy work with or the Guide unit they're members of ... maybe an event to trumpet their quiet, but important and very effective, commitment, might be a way of encouraging others to get involved ... would need a budget, but, hey!, there's no such thing as a free lunch ...

I agree! there are many young people aged 13 - 19 who are doing some really positive work in Croydon that unfortunately the local press don't feel the need to print! Negative stuff always gets in the paper! The Youth Opportunity Fund and UK Youth Parliament and many more young peoples projects are very good examples of young people giving up their time to help and support other young people and adults in the borough! Come on Croydon's local press......print more of these good positive activities that young people are involved in and start to break down the awful barriers that are portraying a very negative picture of our young people today.........remembering that it is still a small minority of young people that involved in negative activities! Yes - we also have many young people working and volunteering at Croydon Voluntary Action who really deserve a bit of recognition. They include young sessional workers working to involvolve children and young people. A young volunteer supporting the mental health forum. Very young (10 - 13 years) volunteers getting active intheir communities. The V programme for young voluntees offers certificates for those doing 100 hours of voluntary work. Perhaps we can combine efforts? Jo Gough Head of Community Involvement Croydon Voluntary Action
